Healthdirect, Australia’s national government-funded virtual healthcare service provider, offers 24/7 access to nurse-led triage and trusted health information. To enhance decision support for nurses handling over 1.3 million calls annually, a cutting-edge AI-powered clinical decision support system (CDSS) was implemented in March 2023. A new generation, consumer-facing, online, AI-powered symptom checker was also implemented in December 2023. This presentation details the implementation of a novel AI-powered CDSS within a national virtual triage service presenting unique hurdles, but ultimately resulting in enhanced accuracy, efficiency, and user satisfaction.
